Jim Rjindael asked:
If you care about anonymous internet surfing as I do then it makes sense to do it properly. I wonder how many people think they are moving across the internet like some ninja stealth surfer when all they’ve done is turn on the privacy settings in Internet Explorer. Well I’m afraid they’re not, agreed they are removing some traces of web sites from their local PC but their visits are recorded and logged on their local ISP logs (kept for two years on command of a European directive), logged on the web servers they visited and then by anybody else who happened to be peeking at the web traffic travelling in clear text over their wireless connections.
If you want to see how anonymous we are next time you’re using a wireless hotspot in an airport, cafe or hotel - fire up a simple free sniffer like Wireshark and see all the web sites everyone is visiting. Sometimes it can be quite a disturbing and interesting experience!
Real Anonymous Internet Surfing takes some Effort
There are so many people out to trap our data and surfing patterns, hackers, identity thieves, spammer and even our Governments. Just searching for a few free anonymous proxies on the internet is unlikely to be a great experience. Even if you are lucky enough to avoid the proxies that have been deliberately set up to trap the thrifty anonymous surfer by some Eastern European Identity thieves, you may find one of the servers which has been setup to track your surfing and then send you a deluge of targeted SPAM.
Those who find a clean anonymous proxy which does its job will eventually probably give up using it because it will be incredibly slow. All the time your every visit to every website will be logged and recorded at your local ISP - along with your emails backed up on tape and left there for who knows to see.
If you really want to have anonymous internet surfing - you need a fast secure anonymous proxy, the facility to switch proxies seamlessly with no effort, all your web traffic needs to be encrypted from the client and back again. You will then be completely anonymous online and your ISP logs will be completely secure and unreadable to anyone just like mine!

GiselleS asked:
Each time we search to buy products online, visit chat rooms, log on to use our internet banking, visit our favourite news or financial sites - all this information is logged and stored as our personal surfing history. This is done via our IP address.
This information about all the websites we have visited can be used to construct a profile of our browsing habits and this information is valuable to website owners, marketers or even the authorities. These records are all stored and held by our Internet Service Providers (ISP’s) and can be easily bought and sold to those interested parties.
To protect us from these people, we can surf the internet anonymously either via web based free anonymous surfing tools or by downloading anonymous surfing software. By using either method, no records of our surfing history can be traced back to our IP address.
So which is the better option?
Web based anonymous surfing tools are known as web anonymizers. They are usually free to use and the process is relatively simple. You go directly to the anonymizer website and type in the URL of the website you want to visit. The anonymizer website then redirects you to the site destination, which sees the anonymizer website server as the IP address and not your own IP identity.
A free web based anonymizer is definitely a convenient option if you’re an occasional surfer…however if you surf the internet more than two hours every day, going backwards and forwards to the anonymizer website can be quite tedious.
The biggest problem however with web based anonymizers is that most of them are not enabled with SSL (Secure Socket Layer) or SSH (Secure SHell) encryption. In other words, you cannot connect to banking, shopping and other secure sites which use this technology.
Commercial anonymizers or anonymous surfing software, are systems that you download and install as a client application. This software manages all the details of anonymous surfing for you. As soon as your browser is loaded, our connections are automatically anonymous…and there is no tedious visiting of an anonymizer website.
The main advantage however is that the best anonymous surfing software will be enabled with SSL (Secure Socket Layer) or SSH (Secure SHell) encryption and protect from not only web browsing but from other web based applications such as email, ICQ, IRC etc…

Stefan Jechel asked:
Many people have no idea that their personal computer can be easily accessed while they are navigating on the internet and that personal information about them and their computer can be gathered and used later by hackers and multiple companies against them.
All these things can happen if your IP address, which is given to your computer when it accesses the internet, is detected by unscrupulous persons. After finding your IP address it is only a matter of time until they will track all your moves around the internet and they will be able to hack into your computer and steal personal information like home address, phone number, and personal passwords.
In no time you can be assaulted with hundreds of commercials for some kind of product you searched for on the internet a day before, or the boss will find out about your last emails or even your wife or husband can find out about the latest web sites you visited.
In order to protect themselves against such eavesdroppers and web sites they are browsing, many people use anonymous surfing. Anonymous surfing allows you to navigate on the internet without leaving a trail of particulars about your browser, your computer system, your country and IP address.
The anonymous surfing works by using an anonymous proxy server which will talk to the web site and then communicate the requested information to you. The anonymous proxy site is waiting for you to enter the address (URL) of the site you wish to go to and then it will retrieve the page for you and present it to you in a safe way.
The web site you are visiting will not know who you are, will not retrieve you IP address and will only have information about the proxy server you use. When using a proxy server you have to make sure this is an anonymous proxy server, meaning that it will not know you IP address because other common proxy servers can see you IP address and so they can sent it towards the target server. The real anonymous proxy servers are not giving away this information and so your IP is safe from eavesdroppers. The anonymous proxy server will provide its own IP address when you visit a site.
In most of the cases you can use free web anonymizers in order to anonymously surf the web. You don’t need to modify any settings in your browser or setup any programs to surf the web anonymously.
This thing is legal as long as you do not use it for stealing information or for making illegal business on the internet. It can only be used for personal protection against family members, companies or any other eavesdropper who might harm you after gathering personal information about you.
